Renewables aren't threatening grid reliability, say AWEA, others
Energy Secretary Rick Perry's recent call for an investigation into the US electrical grid and its reliability is welcome, but renewables aren't a threat, wrote the American Wind Energy Association, the Advanced Energy Economy and the Solar Energy Industries Association in a letter to Perry today. "These energy resources [renewables] have already been integrated smoothly into the electric power system in large and increasing amounts, as demonstrated in countless studies and, more importantly, in real-world experience across the United States," they wrote.

Rocky Mountain Power will continue to embrace renewables, says exec
Rocky Mountain Power will continue to meet its customers' demands for low-cost and reliable electricity by embracing renewables and working with regulators on cost-savings initiatives, writes Gary Hoogeveen, senior vice president and chief commercial officer. He writes that the utility also recognizes that customers want more renewable energy options, which is why Rocky Mountain is planning to invest $3.5 billion in wind upgrades and other projects.

A connection switch between the Block Island offshore wind farm and Block Island was turned on today at 5:30 a.m. Eastern time, providing the island with offshore wind generation for the first time. Moving forward, Block Island will source its electricity from the wind farm and use a 20-mile cable to the mainland for backup power when wind isn't available.

Opinion: Offshore wind is coming to Calif., other states
Offshore wind development has faced a series of challenges in the US, but has gained traction in first Rhode Island, then North Carolina and now in California as the result of collaboration between the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and various stakeholders, writes Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Long Marine Laboratory at University of California at Santa Cruz. He writes that a lease agreement with Trident Winds or another company could help California meet its 50% by 2030 renewables goal.

Wind holds many opportunities for Wyo., says professor
Wind energy, developed properly, could become an important economic driver in Wyoming, said University of Wyoming Wind Energy Research Center Director Jonathan Naughton during a lecture on Thursday. He argued that Wyoming's neighboring states will continue to embrace the industry, regardless of Wyoming's own policies, and that Wyoming should seek opportunities to benefit from wind development.
