AWEA: Offshore wind slated to become a US powerhouse
Offshore wind is about to take off along the East Coast thanks to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy and other leaders, the American Wind Energy Association said, adding that the industry could create 40,000 jobs over the next decade. "Unlocking America's vast offshore wind potential will reliably deliver large amounts of clean power, grow jobs and cement American energy leadership," said CEO Tom Kiernan.

Report: Wind, other renewables enjoy broad support in Iowa
The majority of elected leaders in Iowa supports renewables such as wind and solar, and most landowners have had positive experiences with developers looking to build transmission lines in their communities, according to a report from the Center for Rural Affairs. "We were happy to see strong support for wind and solar among local elected leadership," said study co-author and Policy Program Associate Katie Rock.

R.I. readies for 400-MW clean energy RFP
Rhode Island is expected to hold a request for proposals this summer to add up to 400 megawatts of installed clean energy capacity, supporting Gov. Gina Raimondo's goal to add 1 gigawatt of clean energy through offshore wind, land-based wind and other renewables. "Since announcing our goal to make our energy system 10 times cleaner, we've more than doubled the amount of renewable energy in the state -- from roughly 100 MW to 230," said Raimondo.

Anti-icing tool from Vestas to maintain wind production in cold climates
Vestas has introduced an anti-icing tool that uses electro-thermal heating technology for turbines in cold climates where ice cuts into the production capacity of such machines, according to Vestas. The company said it expects to see demand for the tool in Canada, Sweden, Finland and Norway, and that it has developed a corresponding assessment tool to forecast ice buildup on a machine.

Opinion: Low-cost renewables make sense for Xcel, utilities
Wind and solar energy are a smart choice for Xcel Energy and other utilities because they're more affordable than coal in some parts of the country and have the added benefit of curbing air pollution, write Justin Gillis and Hal Harvey, CEO of research firm Energy Innovation. They call on more utilities to embrace renewables, adding that states should support the transition by sharing the cost of shuttering coal-burning power plants and helping workers who would be affected by the closures.

Proposed tax on Okla. wind generation isn't fair, says wind group
Oklahoma needs a fair tax structure, but it won't achieve it by levying a new tax on wind generation and not other energy sources, like oil and gas, according to wind group OK WindPower. Executive Director Mark Yates said the industry paid $74.5 million in ad valorem taxes in 2017 and was the leading taxpayer in 14 counties.

Neb. senator introduces bill to tighten wind rules
Nebraska state Sen. Tom Brewer introduced a bill on Friday that would redefine the state's definition of a "renewable energy generation facility," by removing wind from the list of qualifying energy sources and undoing other provisions that support the industry's development. The Omaha Public Power District has criticized the proposal, arguing that the provisions targeted in the bill have helped attract major investors such as Facebook.

Survey: Iowa county officials, landowners support wind development
A new survey from the Center for Rural Affairs shows Iowans like what they see: support for wind power among county officials and landowners remains high. Iowa continues to lead the US by generating over 36% of its electricity using wind, and it has the most installed capacity by area, showing that those who know wind best fully recognize its benefits.
