Taking Care of Business

Since 1936, Consumer Reports has been rating products according to quality, reliability, and all-around value on the dollar. The fact that the venerable watchdog magazine has jumped into the environmental-ratings game is a sure sign that our concept of a product’s true value -- that is, net value after deducting for such negatives as hard-to-find replacement parts, a hefty price tag, and yes, environmental impact -- has come a long way since FDR held the White House. (We certainly hope so, at any rate.) Visit the just-launched Greener Choices for energy efficiency ratings and other “eco-valuations” of consumer products for home and office.
