| June 10, 2009 | | | | | THIS ISSUE'S SPONSOR | The Green IT Perspective By Preston Gralla Greenpeace has long been in the forefront of the environmental movement, and through the years it has been both controversial and effective. Love the organization or hate it, you can't deny that is has managed to get a great deal of publicity for the environment -- and for itself along the way. The organization has also been issuing Green IT and computing scorecards for some time, and recently came up with its "CoolIT Challenge" in which it issued a scorecard about the green IT actions of top technology vendors such as IBM, Dell, Sun, Intel, and Cisco. But this is one instance in which it appears as if Greenpeace's hunt for publicity may have trumped the actual value of the organization's actions. As I point in my blog post "Greenpeace misses the boat with its Green IT campaign," the scorecard doesn't at all accurately reflect the actions of Green IT vendors. Points, for example, are awarded for vendors giving speeches, rather than for the technology they develop and sell. And when Greenpeace does try to give points for the actual technology, it does a dismal job. It didn't even note, for example, that HP has a new line of extremely green and powerful ProLiant servers, and gave the company only a 3 out of 50 possible points. It's good that Greenpeace recognizes the importance of Green IT. But it would be better if the organization got its facts straight. For details, check out my blog. If you'd like to see a good summary of the findings themselves, then check out the GreenerComputing article, "Greenpeace Finds IT Firms Lacking on Climate Leadership." I'd like to find out whether you agree with me or Greenpeace about the scorecard, so after reading the article, stop by my blog, and post your comments. I'll read and respond to every one. | | Featured News | Greenpeace Misses the Boat with Its Green IT Campaign | By Preston Gralla | Greenpeace recently made headlines with its "CoolIT Challenge" in which it issued a scorecard about the green IT actions of top technology vendors such as IBM, Dell, Sun, Intel, and Cisco. Greenpeace concluded all of them were doing a poor job --- but it's Greenpeace itself, not the tech firms, that missed the boat. The Greenpeace campaign, while well-intentioned, is simplistic and misguided....
