REPLACING WATER WASTERS
There's No (Re)place(ment) Like Home - Save Water Week
If 10,000 Biters switch out an old toilet for a water-thrifty one, we'll save enough water to fill 1,600 backyard swimming pools.
Wanna lower that Kansas-size water bill? Wicked. Just replace water-sucks like Auntie Em's old bathroom fixtures (including her pre-1993 Toto) to save major H2O and money.
The Benefits
  • Clicking your heels over water savings. We're using and polluting our water faster than we can replenish our clean supply - so saving it's a big deal.
  • Not selling the farm to pay your bills. A few changes can save you $170 per year on your water and sewer bills alone.
  • Saving so much energy it could power a twister. Since it takes energy to treat our water, if one out of 100 American homes retrofitted with water-efficient fixtures, we'd save enough energy to power 909 homes for a year.

Personally Speaking
Heather and Jen both recently bought new (to them) homes, and are in the process of green-ifying their water fixtures. Pics to come…

Wanna Try?
Dishwashers
  • Change it out if your dishwasher was built before 1994, and you'll save more than $30 per year in utility costs.
Faucets
  • In your bathroom, if your faucet's not a low-flow version and pours out more than 2 gallons per minute, attach a faucet aerator. You'll save up to $80 per year on utility bills.
Showerheads
  • If your showerhead blasts more than 3 gallons per minute, switch it out for a low-flow one. Try this one from Niagara Conservation ($17). Since you'll also save energy (due to less hot water use), you'll shave about $80 per year off your utility bills.
Toilets
  • Replace your pre-1993 toilet (that was the year regulations changed). Compared to an old-school 3.5 gallon-per-flush toilet, an EPA WaterSense-labeled toilet will use 1.3 gallons or less, saving $90 per year.
Washers
  • Replace it if it's more than 10 years old - and note: front-loaders save more water than top-loaders. An Energy Star-qualified washer can save you $145 per year between power and water bills.
More resources
  • Toilet Rebate - find local rebates available if you change out your toilet.
  • Check with your local water department - many offer rebates to help cover the costs of new water fixtures (some even give 'em away).

According to The Wizard of Oz film lore, designers used Jell-O crystals to color the horses in Emerald City; their scenes were shot quickly, before the horses could lick it off.
