The passing of Legislative Bill 824 in 2016 reduced regulatory barriers for wind development in Nebraska and will help the state enjoy job creation, land lease payments and other benefits associated with the industry, writes state Sen. Xcel plans 300-MW wind project in S.D.

Xcel Energy has decided to build a 300-megawatt project in South Dakota that will be known as Dakota Range I and II, the company said Wednesday. "Our customers count on us to provide reliable, affordable and clean energy, and this investment will do just that," said Chris Clark, President of Xcel for Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Opinion: Falling costs are spurring utility-renewables investments
Falling costs, growing demand and supportive state and federal policies are driving Ameren Missouri and other utilities to invest in renewables such as wind and solar, writes Ashok Gupta, a senior energy economist at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "Investments such as these will not only help protect our air and water but will also create good jobs and spur additional investments in our economy," Gupta writes.

ScottishPower: UK needs more land-based wind to meet carbon goals
The UK needs more land-based wind development if it wants to meet its carbon reduction goals, according to ScottishPower Renewables CEO Keith Anderson. The company said it recently hit the 2-gigawatt installed capacity mark in the UK after implementing a roughly $873.3 million plan to build eight new wind farms.

Chilean government taps Colbun to build new wind farm
The Chilean government announced Wednesday it has chosen state utility Colbun to build a new 607-megawatt wind farm that will require an investment of almost $1 billion. "It's a very important leap for Chile," said Energy Minister Andres Rebolledo.

Report: Calif. utilities can cut costs by accelerating wind, solar adoption
California utilities can directly cut consumer energy costs by accelerating the adoption of wind and solar projects, according to the state Public Utilities Commission. Observers say that State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon's bill to increase the state's renewable energy goal would have supported that shift; by rejecting it, the California Legislature may raise costs for consumers.
