The world is on track to invest $7 trillion in renewables by 2040, resulting in 50 gigawatts of new installed wind capacity and 75 GW of solar annually, according to International Energy Agency's World Energy Outlook 2017. The report said, however, that low-cost renewables need the support of stable policies in order to reduce emissions enough to combat climate change.

Apex seeks PPA for 75-MW Va. project
Apex Clean Energy is still seeking a power purchase agreement for its planned 75-megawatt Rocky Forge Wind farm in Virginia, even though it hoped to break ground on the project this month, according to the company. A representative wrote on Monday that Apex is looking for the "right partner" and has yet to set a construction start date.

Kan. utility propose new wind tariff for C&I buyers
Kansas utility Westar Energy has proposed a new fixed-price program that will allow it its corporate and industrial customers to buy wind energy at a lower rate than it currently offers. "Westar's ability to procure local, low-cost bundled renewable energy and offer that product to businesses considering locating or expanding in Kansas will help set Westar and Kansas apart from other utilities and other states," it said.

Report: Eliminating met masts can help firms realize cost savings
Met masts are an expensive wind measuring tool that can increasingly be replaced by remote sensing lidars and other new technologies, according to measurement tech company Vaisala. "Developers and operators that consolidate their use of the technology will realize the commercial benefits of cutting assessment times, reducing development costs, improving asset performance and unlocking a greater understanding of the wind resource," Vaisala's report said.

Madison Gas Wis. project a step in the right direction, says observer
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin's decision to approve Madison Gas and Electric's proposed wind farm near Saratoga is encouraging and a signal that the state may be moving toward a more sustainable future, writes Bruce Beck. "Available science suggests our transition to clean energy will likely be too slow, unless governments take proactive steps," he writes.

Editorial: Renewables, not natural gas, is the way forward for N.C.
The 600-mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline that would carry natural gas into North Carolina is the wrong choice for the state for several reasons, the biggest of which is the fact it would slow its conversion to renewables, writes the editorial board of The News & Observer in Raleigh. "Money should be poured into the development of renewable energy and the generation of power on site rather than into the pumping in of fossil fuel from hundreds of miles away," it writes.

Economics, public opinion behind shift to clean energy
A clear majority of the world's population is in favor of an accelerated adoption of clean energy tech, and 74% of those surveyed believe green energy will boost their country's economy. Offshore wind farms are now meeting or exceeding the economy of coal or gas, and that trend is likely to continue.

N.D. PSC holds hearing on NextEra's Foxtail project
NextEra Energy's 75-turbine, 150-megawatt Foxtail Wind Energy Center has undergone extensive assessments and will not have a negative effect on North Dakota's archaeological, tribal or historical assets, said the firm at a public hearing before the state Public Service Commission on Monday. If approved, the project will generate roughly $25 million in land leases.

Fact Check: What critics are getting wrong about wind power during the tax reform debate
Ever since the House released its tax reform proposal on Nov. 1, skeptics of wind power have jumped at the opportunity to spread misleading information, especially about the Production Tax Credit (PTC) that has unleashed the private capital needed for wind to scale up. Here's a roundup of a few egregious examples, followed by a dose of reality. Read more.
