Trump administration to open more East Coast areas for offshore wind | NextEra Energy unit arranges PPA for 104-MW wind farm in Iowa | IRENA: Renewable energy generation up 8.3% worldwide in 2017
The Trump administration has confirmed two new offshore wind leasing areas off the coast of Massachusetts and is seeking feedback on potential projects in the New York Bight, a swath of water between Long Island, N.Y., and New Jersey. "Expanding the market for offshore wind is good news for American workers and the coastal communities needed to manufacture, deploy, and operate these projects," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan.
An affiliate of NextEra Energy Resources has secured a long-term power purchase agreement with the Central Iowa Power Cooperative for its 104-megawatt Heartland Divide Wind Farm in Iowa, according to the companies. "The Heartland Divide wind project is expected to bring millions of dollars in additional revenue to landowners and local communities as it generates clean, renewable energy for CIPCO's members and their customers," said NextEra Senior Vice President of Development Mike O'Sullivan.
The world added 167 gigawatts of installed renewable energy capacity in 2017, representing an increase of 8.3% to 2,179 GW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. "This latest data confirms that the global energy transition continues to move forward at a fast pace, thanks to rapidly falling prices, technology improvements and an increasingly favorable policy environment," said Director General Adnan Amin.
The Bureau of Land Management has opened a public comment period that will run through June 13 to gather feedback on the proposed Crescent Peak Wind Energy Project. If approved, the project would have a capacity up to 500 megawatts and would be located 10 miles west of Searchlight, Nev.
Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy have launched a 100-megawatt wind farm in Ontario, Canada, featuring 34 3.2-MW turbines from Siemens Gamesa, according to the duo. The North Kent wind farm is expected to infuse $40 million in the area economy over the next 20 years.
Avangrid Renewables has honored its Good Neighbor Agreement to donate to civic and community groups in San Diego County by giving nearly $100,000 each to the Mountain Empire Unified School District and Mountain Health and Community Services. "We're proud of our work to bring clean renewable power to thousands of California homes," said President and CEO Laura Beane.
UK utility Northumbrian Water will get enough renewable energy to power its 1,858 sites for the next four years from Orsted under a new agreement. "Orsted is driving the transition to low-carbon energy systems in the UK, and we believe that businesses should have access to renewable electricity supply without incurring additional cost," said Jeff Whittingham, managing director of Orsted's UK sales division.
The Clean Power Plan makes good economic and environmental sense for the US because it would curb greenhouse gas emissions while creating a competitive, stable playing field for clean energy development, Apple said. "The availability of electricity generated from clean energy sources provides businesses with powerful tools to control a significant component of their cost structure, thereby helping them be more competitive on a global scale," the company said.
Jersey City, N.J., Mayor Steven Fulop has proclaimed 2018 the Year of Energy and said the city will use the initiative to pursue renewable energy development and to reduce its carbon footprint. "At a time of federal inaction to fight climate change, it is vital for cities to take the lead on sustainability, and Jersey City is no exception," said Fulop.
