AWEA's Hunt: Non-utility buyers must play a role in transmission
Corporations interested in renewables can spur the development of the industry by participating in transmission planning through regional transmission organizations, says American Wind Energy Association Deputy Director for Electricity Policy Hannah Hunt. "Engaging large buyers of renewable energy with transmission planners will be an efficient way to ensure they get the information they need to plan for the future," Hunt says.

US offshore wind industry is strengthening, expert says
Consolidation, such as Orsted's planned acquisition of Deepwater Wind, is a strong indicator that the US offshore wind industry is maturing, according to Stephanie McClellan, director of the University of Delaware's Special Initiative on Offshore Wind. "The U.S. industry is definitely moving to bigger, lower-cost offshore wind farms," she said.

Pattern to help SunZia re-apply for N.M. transmission line
Pattern Energy has secured approval to move forward with the 2.2-gigawatt Corona Wind Project in New Mexico, but the rejection of a corresponding transmission line may create challenges for the project. Pattern says it will help SunZia re-submit an application for its 520-mile transmission line with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission.

Ore. utility to pilot smart grid technology
Portland General Electric in Oregon is preparing to launch three smart grids that will allow customers to track energy demand in real time and potentially make decisions to reduce their energy usage. The utility says the project paves the way for it to add more renewables without threatening grid safety or reliability.

Opinion: Hurricanes reinforce the need for wind, solar
The Carolinas, US Virgin Islands and other areas prone to hurricanes and other natural disasters can increase grid resiliency by adding more renewables, such as wind and solar, writes Adam Freed, a principal at Bloomberg Associates. "[S]olutions do exist that not only increase resilience against climate change, but also reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and help boost local economies by lowering energy costs," Freed writes.

Green-energy investments empower renewables, experts say
Investments in green-energy funds strengthen renewable energy companies, signal a market shift toward renewables and give companies the capital and stability needed to invest in more projects, according to Rocky Mountain Institute principal Jeff Waller and other investment experts. Wind and solar are mature enough to thrive without federal support and will continue to grow, adds Lucas White, manager of the GMO Climate Change Fund.

How 4 nations are shifting to a green-energy economy
The evolution of energy in the US, Japan, China and Denmark illustrates four distinct approaches to clean energy and climate change, write Amy Harder and Naema Ahmed of Axios. Denmark, they write, has a huge potential for wind development and already sources nearly 50% of its total electricity needs from renewables.
