LECTURE EXAMINES CAUSES OF SOCIETY’S OBESITY EPIDEMIC

MADISON — Fighting fat in a society in which obesity is reaching epidemic proportions will be the topic of a lecture by Steven N. Blair, a researcher whose work focuses on the links between lifestyle and health, on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Blair is president and chief executive officer of the Dallas-based Cooper Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides research and educational programs dealing with a range of health issues, including exercise physiology, behavior change and health promotion.

His lecture will examine the causes of obesity and strategies that can be employed to stem the growing national health problem. The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 1140 of the Natatorium.

In addition to his work with the Cooper Institute, Blair is an adjunct professor in the schools of public health at the University of South Carolina, the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, the University of North Texas and the University of Houston. His work has
emphasized exercise, physical fitness, body composition and chronic disease.

The lecture is sponsored by the Lectures Committee at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in cooperation with the departments of Kinesiology, Population Health Sciences and Nutritional Sciences, the Institute on Aging and the student Kinesiology Club.

Blair also will be a featured speaker at the Current Concepts on Nutrition and Aging Conference at the Pyle Center, 702 Landon St., on Thursday, Sept. 23. That event is sponsored by UW-Extension Family Living Programs. More information on this conference, which targeted at nutritional, social service and medical professionals, is available at
