On first blush, it would seem as if one of the simplest ways for IT to go green is to purchase workstations that use as little power as possible. Unfortunately, it's not quite as simple to do that as it seems.
Why not? Because to date, there has been no comprehensive way to get a true measure of workstation power consumption. Getting an accurate number has proven elusive, because workstations are typically devoted to two specialized tasks, crunching and high-end graphics. In addition, workstations generally have more disk drives than comparable PCs. This makes it quite difficult to measure true power consumption.
The Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC) is in the process of formulating a power-consumption benchmark for workstations, but it's not ready yet. Columnist Andrew Binstock, however, has done research, and come up with a formula and two sets of benchmarks to help you, until the SPEC benchmark is here. So if you're looking to gauge workstation power consumption today, check out his latest column.
FEATURED STORYBy Andrew Binstock
Andrew Binstock gives you the lowdown on how you can gauge workstation power today, without having to wait for industry benchmarks.
