Fwd: Trump administration wants to help renewables compete, says Perry
Trump administration wants to help renewables compete, says Perry | Opinion: Low-carbon policies are good for economy, jobs creation | Mass. seeks 9.45 GWh of clean energy annually with RFP
The Trump administration supports technological advances and policies that will help renewables like wind and solar compete with fossil fuels, said Energy Secretary Rick Perry on Monday after a G-7 meeting. "We are committed to developing, deploying and commercializing breakthrough technologies and developing the necessary policies that will help renewables become competitive with traditional sources of energy," he said.
Low-carbon policies encourage well-paying jobs in growing industries, such as wind and solar, provide rural landowners with a reliable revenue stream and drive economic growth, writes The Climate Trust's Kristen Kleiman. "An economy based on low-carbon energy should be seen as progress: It creates jobs that can't be outsourced, stimulates new products and designs, increases American energy independence, and, in the end, makes our economy and planet healthier," she writes.
The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources and five state utilities have outlined a recent request for proposals that ultimately seeks to add 9.45 gigawatt-hours of clean energy generating capacity to its grid each year. The entities said that they would sign 15- to 20-year power purchase agreements and that land-based wind, hydroelectric and solar projects qualify.

US Wind has proposed moving its 750-megawatt Maryland offshore wind farm about 5 miles farther out from shore in response Ocean City Council concerns that the project will be too visible, according to the company. "We recognize the concerns expressed by the council and understand the tourism-based economy Ocean City has cultivated over the years to become a leading Atlantic Coast resort," said Project Development Director Paul Rich.
Saudi Arabia will launch a renewable energy leasing round next week, with the goal of adding 700 megawatts of installed wind and solar capacity to its grid. Energy Minister Khalid Al Falih said his agency has prequalified 24 firms to compete for the right to build a 400-MW wind farm under the auction.
UK renewable energy services firm 3sun has hired 100 new turbine technicians, bringing its total turbine technician workforce to 400, according to the company. It added that some of the new hires would help install 56 6-megawatt turbines at Galloper Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of England next month.
Carbon emissions from the US energy sector declined 1.7% in 2016, according to the Energy Information Administration. "A significant reduction in coal use for electricity generation was offset by increased generation from natural gas and renewable sources," it said.
China's wind and solar industries could generate up to $782 billion in investments between 2016 and 2030 as it works to meet its 20% by 2030 renewable energy target, according to a report from Greenpeace and other groups. China's National Development and Reform Commission said that the country has set a goal to increase its installed wind capacity to 210 gigawatts by 2020.
India needs more investments if it plans to meet its goal of having a total installed renewable energy capacity of 175 gigawatts by 2022, according to the International Energy Agency. "Providing incentives to invest in renewables and flexibility over time will be important to meet the country's energy strategy goals," wrote Michael Waldron, an energy investment analyst, in a commentary for the agency.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo should continue to work toward his promise of closing the state's coal-burning power plants and replacing them with clean energy sources, especially renewables from New York, writes William Reinhardt. "Across upstate New York, the job potential of stronger state and local policies to support solar and wind energy development, and greater energy efficiency, far surpasses the jobs created by the continued exploitation of fracked fossil fuel resources," he writes.
The Oklahoma Senate has approved a bill that would roll back the state income tax credit for wind production three years ahead of schedule, should Gov. Mary Fallin sign it. The Wind Coalition President Jeffrey Clark said that the wind industry wanted to discuss the sunset date further, adding that it's the only industry to offer to voluntarily phase-out support mechanisms.
PJM study quantifies wind's value for building reliable, resilient power system
The largest grid operator in the US just released an innovative study that quantifies the reliability of possible future energy mixes. It found that portfolios with very large amounts of wind energy, dozens of times greater than the current mix, scored among the highest for reliability and resilience. Read more.
