AWEA taps Calif. legislative leader to speak at WINDPOWER 2017 | Analysis: New projects will help Neb. realize full potential for wind generation | Md. poised to become national leader in offshore wind, says observer
California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon will be the keynote speaker at WINDPOWER 2017 in Anaheim, Calif., in May, according to the American Wind Energy Association. "California is an early pioneer of wind farm development, and that's paid off for the state with 3,000 jobs and over $12 billion in investment," said AWEA CEO Tom Kiernan.
Nebraska has huge potential for wind development -- the fourth best in the US -- but sourced 10% of its total electricity from wind last year, according to data from the American Wind Energy Association. New projects, like the 400-megawatt Grande Prairie wind farm in Holt County, will help the state realize its potential for wind production.
If the Maryland Public Service Commission approves either of the two offshore wind farms it's considering, Maryland would likely become the nation's leader in terms of installed offshore wind capacity, writes Cara Newcomer of The Associated Press. Maryland PSC Communications Director Tori Leonard said the PSC may approve both proposals, depending on how it would affect pricing and fees for ratepayers.
Avangrid said it is seeking to enter the offshore wind market in Massachusetts, which is quickly growing because of a state target of having 1.6 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2027. "With our majority shareholder Iberdrola, who has currently about 1.3GW of offshore wind in in construction and operation, we have the ability to leverage that experience for our own entity," said CEO Jim Torgerson.
A Pattern Energy subsidiary has petitioned the Mississippi Public Service Commission for a siting certificate for its proposed 2-gigawatt Southern Cross transmission line, said the companies. "The Southern Cross project is the only project to connect low-cost renewable energy in Texas to the south-east while also creating jobs and generating strong economic benefits in both the southern states and Texas," said Pattern President and CEO Mike Garland.
Acciona Energy held a ceremony on Wednesday to inaugurate its 93-megawatt, 31-turbine San Roman project in Cameron County, Texas. During the ceremony, Chairman and CEO Jose Manuel Entrecanales Domecq praised the county's commitment to the environment and economic development, adding, "It's hospitable, business-friendly and has a very stable regulatory framework, which for us is very important because these are 30-year projects."
Energy production in the US is growing due to market forces driving renewable energy growth, rather than fossil fuels, writes Bob Doppelt, executive director of The Resource Innovation Group. "[President Donald] Trump's actions won't stop the transition to clean energy or efforts to protect the climate here on the West Coast," he writes.
Duke Energy is slowly transitioning away from coal and is on track to generate 36% and 9% of its total electricity from natural gas and renewables, respectively, by 2030, said the company. In its 2016 sustainability report, Duke said by 2020, it also plans to either own or have power purchase agreements in place with 8,000 megawatts of installed renewable energy capacity, including wind.
A North Carolina House of Representatives committee on Wednesday advanced a modified version of a bill that would restrict wind turbine siting near military bases. The bill, which passes to the House Homeland Security Committee, the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee and the Rules Committee for review, would allow the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to approve wind farms that have been deemed safe to operate near military sites.
Calif. state Senate leader to keynote WINDPOWER 2017
Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, the California Senate's most powerful member and legislative champion of the state's hallmark 50% renewable energy standard law passed in 2015, will provide a keynote address at North America's largest wind power trade show on May 23, in Anaheim.
