AWEA's Vaughan: Diverse energy mix boosts resiliency amid cold weather
A diverse energy mix featuring more wind energy has made it possible for grid operators to keep the lights on as frigid temperatures sweep the East Coast, according to American Wind Energy Association spokesman Evan Vaughan. Observers say coal and nuclear energy leaders are making similar arguments, paving the way for future clashes between renewables and fossil fuels in 2018 and beyond.

Opinion: Reps. Paulsen, Emmer helped protect US wind jobs
Reps. Erik Paulsen and Tom Emmer, both Minnesota Republicans, defended the US wind industry during the tax code overhaul, protecting thousands of wind jobs and more than 3,000 in Minnesota alone, writes Blattner Energy Vice President of Wind Jeremy Wacker. "We can now look forward to the wind industry adding another 50,000 American jobs by 2020, including 8,000 factory jobs, according to Navigant Consulting," he writes.

NRG Energy CEO touts need for competition in energy market
The Energy Department's plan to increase grid resiliency through a new rule favoring nuclear and coal-burning sources is commendable, but other factors at play must be considered, such as the need for a competitive energy market and stable power deliverability, said NRG Energy President and CEO Mauricio Gutierrez during a Tuesday podcast. He added that public support for combating climate change "transcends political parties" and will likely continue to grow.

Opinion: Wind energy would have increased TVA's grid resiliency
The Tennessee Valley Authority could have increased grid resiliency and access to low-cost wind energy by signing a power-purchase agreement with Clean Line Energy Partners' proposed 700-mile transmission line, writes Pam Sohn. She argues that contrary to TVA's claims, it actually decided against the deal due to the anti-wind sentiments of Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and the Trump administration's pro-coal agenda.
