Transmission is critical for N.Y. renewables growth, say panelists
New York will need to add more transmission infrastructure to support the growth of wind and solar projects, many of which will be located upstate and far from the grid, said New York Independent System Operator CEO Brad Jones during the New York Renewable Energy Conference. IBM Senior Vice President for Cognitive Solutions and Research John Kelly III added that he expects artificial intelligence to disrupt transmission technology and allow for a new level of renewable energy integration.

Analysis: Google paved the way for nonutility renewables procurement
When Google acquired an Iowa wind farm in 2010, it kickstarted a movement that's commonplace today: the direct procurement of renewables by nonutility buyers, writes Adele Peters. In 2017, corporations signed deals to purchase 2.89 gigawatts of clean energy, and they are expected to surpass that total in 2018.

PSO: Wind Catcher project would save ratepayers money
The Public Service Co. of Oklahoma is striving to reach an agreement with Oklahoma regulators that would allow it to recoup about $1.4 billion of the $4.5 billion it plans to invest in its Wind Catcher Energy Connection project. PSO says the settlement would initially raise costs for ratepayers, but would deliver significant savings over the course of its 25-year lifespan.

Wind, solar duo poised to offset Wash. state coal plant closure
TransAlta will begin phasing out a coal-burning power plant in Centralia, Wash., in 2020, pulling roughly 1,340 megawatts of generating capacity from the grid, says the company. The 140-megawatt Skookumchuck Wind Energy Project and 180-MW Tono Solar array are under development in the area and are expected to offset the change in capacity caused by the closure.

New bill would add vets to the wind energy workforce
Responsibility, technical skills, dedication to the mission, the desire to serve a greater good, and the ability to work as a team -- these are all traits found in abundance among America's veterans. The men and women who served our country have brought these qualities to wind energy jobs across the country, and they're a huge reason why U.S. wind power has grown so successfully in recent years. In fact, America's veterans find wind jobs at a rate 72% higher than the average U.S. industry. Now, a new bill could help even more veterans bring their valuable skills to rewarding careers in wind.
