The first annual National Biodiesel Conference & Expo wrapped up today, widely praised as a huge success by attendees. About 600 people registered for the conference.

“To have this many people come to the first conference is a true testimony to the growing popularity of this fuel,” said Bob Metz, NBB Chairman. “It’s striking to see so many people of very different backgrounds come together under the biodiesel banner. I’ve seen surfers and farmers standing side by side at this conference, all eager to learn more about biodiesel.”

Highlights included a plant tour at Imperial Western Products’ (www.biotanefuels.com) biodiesel plant in Coachella Valley. Conference session topics included fuel standards and fuel quality, new markets for biodiesel, engine testing and research, legislative case studies, user testimony and a look at the mature European biodiesel industry.

“There’s no doubt that the success of this conference will contribute significantly to the future of biodiesel development in the US,” said Raffaello Garofalo, secretary general of the European Biodiesel Board

Actress Daryl Hannah also addressed conference attendees. Along with colleague and fellow biodiesel enthusiast Charris Ford, Hannah talked about her passion for biodiesel, which she uses in her personal vehicles, including an El Camino.

“We have the technology to reduce greenhouse gasses and grow much of our own fuel,” Hannah said. “We have the technology to make sure no kid goes to school breathing dangerous toxins. We have the technology NOW, and that technology is biodiesel. We are here to cheer you on and to thank the National Biodiesel Board, the scientists, the producers, the distributors and all of the biodiesel user advocates for your fantastic work.”
