Opinion: Clean energy policies are driving job creation in rural US

The wind energy Production Tax Credit and other policies that support carbon emissions reductions and clean energy development "form the backbone of a rural economic agenda that is creating jobs in Rural America," writes Roger Johnson, president of the National Farmers Union. "While some in Washington rush to embrace coal and big oil, heartland voters know our future is with biofuels, wind and solar," he writes.

N.J. regulator approves executive order targeting offshore wind
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has signed off on an executive order from Gov. Phil Murphy calling for the implementation of the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act and a 1.1-gigawatt offshore wind tender. The state BPU also advised holding a regional roundtable to discuss collaboration with other offshore wind efforts in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.

N.M. official asks Air Force to pay $25M for lost wind farm revenue
The US Air Force uses an area slated for the second phase of Avangrid Renewables' El Cabo wind farm for low-altitude flight training, potentially cutting the size of Avangrid's 114-turbine project in half. New Mexico Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn has written a letter to Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson asking the agency to pay the state of New Mexico $25 million to offset the revenue lost from downsizing the project.

Producer signs 30-year PPA with undisclosed utility
Independent power producer sPower has secured a 30-year power purchase agreement with an undisclosed utility for output from its 220-megawatt Prevailing project in South Dakota, according to the firm. The project is expected to yield $56 million in tax benefits over the duration of its life.

Dutch firm Eneco to employ Greenbyte turbine optimization software
Dutch energy group Eneco will install Greenbyte's Breeze data management software throughout its wind portfolio, potentially optimizing roughly 1-gigawatt worth of operating capacity, according to the companies. "We found Breeze to be the most suitable solution on the market and the one that best meets our current needs," added Head of Asset Management and Operations Onshore Wind Mathieu Meijer.

The American Wind Energy Association has recognized Acciona with the Safety and Health Achievement Gold Award and the Operations in Excellence Award for its high safety standards and for the effective operation of its renewable energy sites. "This honor motivates us to continue working to strengthen our safety culture," said Acciona Energy USA Global CEO Rafael Esteban.

International offshore wind leaders head to N.J. for annual meeting
Representatives from Orsted, Statoil, Siemens Gamesa and other turbine manufacturers and delegations from countries such as Denmark, the UK and Germany are headed to New Jersey for the fifth International Partnering Forum scheduled for April 3 to 6. Organizers said the US Atlantic coast presents an opportunity for offshore wind development.

Md. General Assembly considers increasing state RPS
The Maryland General Assembly is considering a bill that has been cross-filed in the state House and Senate that would increase Maryland's Renewable Portfolio Standard to 50% by 2030. A separate bill is also under consideration from state Del. Shane Robinson that would call for a 100% shift to clean energy by 2035.

Calif. leaders, citizens denounce EPA efforts to repeal the CPP
Hundreds of critics of the Trump administration's proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan spoke out during an Environmental Protection Agency "listening session" in San Francisco on Wednesday. "California is in complete opposition to the EPA's proposal," said state Air Resources Board Chairwoman Mary Nichols.
