NRDC, 2 veterans criticize wind bill under consideration in N.Y.
A bill that would temporarily block wind farms near New York's Fort Drum from receiving state support is unnecessary because state and federal systems, such as the Defense Department's Siting ClearingHouse, already oversee energy development near military sites, according to separate statements from the Natural Resources Defense Council and veterans Dave Belote and Jon Powers. The legislation could also "stifle economic growth in the area and prevent hundreds of clean energy jobs from being created," said the NRDC.

Efficiency measures are helping the US curb its energy consumption and that, combined with renewables growth, has led to declines in coal and natural gas over the past year, writes John Timmer, citing Energy Information Agency data. Renewables, including biomass, account for more than 18% of US electrical generation.

N.J. offshore wind bill could revive 24-MW Fishermen's pilot
A New Jersey legislative committee is scheduled to review a bill Thursday that would ease the permitting process for offshore wind farms and potentially revive a 24-megawatt pilot offshore wind project from Fishermen's Energy. "It's a good effort to diversify our energy portfolio," said bill sponsor Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, adding that he expects Gov. Phil Murphy to support the proposal.

There's never been a better time to invest in wind power
Here's a talking point that never gets old -- American wind power is 67% cheaper than it was in 2009. That means in many parts of the country, wind is now the cheapest source of new electric generating capacity, and it's cost-competitive in many more. These cost reductions come from a variety of new efficiencies. Read more.
