Energy Dept.: US grid stability depends on "all-of-the-above" energy approach
Reliability can be restored to the US electrical grid, which has been threatened by the decline of fossil fuels, increased renewables and environmental policies, by embracing an "all-of-the-above" approach to energy that uses the most effective combination of domestic sources, according to the Energy Department's new grid report. American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan said the report "provides a number of valuable policy recommendations," such as valuing reliability services that wind provides, minimizing regulatory barriers to energy production and accelerating transmission growth.

Renewables could power 139 nations by 2050, says report
One hundred and thirty-nine nations worldwide could transition to 100% renewables by 2050 while creating jobs and significantly curbing carbon emissions, according to a study in Joule. "Our findings suggest that the benefits are so great that we should accelerate the transition to wind, water and solar, as fast as possible, by retiring fossil-fuel systems early wherever we can," said researcher Mark Delucchi.

Minnesota-based Anderson Trucking Service was one of the first transportation companies to get involved in the US wind industry and has transported more than 190,000 wind components since 2003, writes Matt Perkins. Vice President of Projects Gene Lemke said ATS, which accounts for at least one-third of all US wind transports, maximizes efficiency by stockpiling wind equipment and ensuring all shipments include the parts for a complete turbine.

Top three takeaways from the Energy Dept.'s grid study
After months of speculation, the Energy Department released a much-anticipated study of the US electric grid last night. It focused on a critical question -- how do we make sure we keep the lights on for American families and businesses? From our initial review of the report, there are three particularly valuable takeaways. These primary findings will be discussed in more detail in our forthcoming analytical white paper "DOE Study: Markets and Infrastructure Key to Electric Reliability and Resilience," and are summarized here.
