The American Wind Energy Association's American Wind Week is an opportunity to celebrate American innovation in wind -- the nation's largest source of renewable energy, supporting more than 100,000 jobs nationwide, according to AWEA. "We started American Wind Week to honor the American innovators who taught the world how to harness the wind for large-scale electricity generation," said CEO Tom Kiernan.
Iowa's history of innovation and investment in wind and other energy sources has resulted in low-cost electricity, job creation and new revenue streams for rural areas, writes Gov. Kim Reynolds. "I believe Iowa is a red state with a blueprint for the United States' next steps," she writes.
Newton, Iowa, has been able to revive its ailing industrial community by embracing wind development, observers say. After gathering interest from landowners, Hawaiian Electric has developed a list of potential renewable energy sites and is preparing to launch a request for proposals for new projects, according to the company. The company said that it is working with landowners and developers "toward achieving our state's 100% renewable energy goal," said Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development Shelee Kimura.
New Jersey is falling behind other US states in terms of wind development, but that may change depending on the outcome of a proposed investment tax credit bill introduced by Sens. Gulf Island built the foundation for the Block Island offshore wind farm in Rhode Island, and other companies are finding new opportunities in seafloor surveying, equipment transport and other applications.
Lake Erie Energy Development Corp.'s proposed offshore wind pilot in Lake Erie is very exciting and positions both the company and Ohio to take advantage of the many benefits of offshore wind, writes Larry Viterna. "Let's keep supporting LEEDCo and Ohio in the effort to become an economic and technical leader in this new and valuable industry," he writes.
Cloud computing company Salesforce announced it will join CleanPowerSF as it continues efforts toward running global operations on 100% renewable energy. The San Francisco program is part of a statewide initiative whereby companies and residents team with Pacific Gas & Electric on cleaner energy at cost-effective prices.
Scottish Power Renewables has secured approval from the British government to move forward with its proposed 1.2-gigawatt, 172-turbine East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, said the company. It added that the project is one of four it has under various stages of development in the area.
