Apex Clean Energy, Renewable Energy Systems and other firms with wind farms under various stages of development in North Carolina are keeping an eye on the state's activities to decide whether they want to move forward with their projects, writes Neel Keller. Apex Senior Manager of Federal Affairs Kevin Chandler said his company was disappointed by Gov. Roy Cooper's decision to pass an 18-month moratorium on wind, but said it may still advance its Timbermill Wind project.

Analysis: Rural electric co-ops are switching to renewables
State-level renewable energy policies, federal tax credits, falling costs and growing demand are driving rural electric cooperatives across the US to transition to wind and other clean energy sources, writes Herman Trabish. The American Wind Energy Association said that in 2016, rural co-ops added more than 900 megawatts of new installed wind capacity.

Report: Offshore wind would benefit Md. city
Offshore wind development would bolster the economy of Ocean City, Md., without having a negative effect on tourism, according to a Sage Policy Group report released Friday. Chairman and CEO Anirban Basu added that different generations have different perceptions on wind, and that young people may be attracted to the presence of offshore turbines in the city.

Scottish council clears path for 74.8-MW wind farm
The East Ayrshire council has approved Banks Renewables' proposed 74.8-megawatt Lethans wind farm, passing it to the Scottish Energy and Consents Department for a final decision. If approved, the project will feature 22 turbines.

IRENA: India could source 25% of its electricity from renewables by 2030
India could source 25% of its total electricity needs from renewables by 2030 by using a combination of wind, solar, hydro and biofuels, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. It added that if it continues to rely heavily on coal-burning sources, than that number could decline from a current rate of 17% to 12% by 2030.

Sri Lanka could be 100% powered by renewables by 2050, says report
Sri Lanka has the potential to source 100% of its total electricity needs from renewables by 2050, according to a report from the UN Development Program and Asian Development Bank. The report said that to reach that goal, the country would have to increase its installed wind and solar capacities to 15,000 megawatts and 16,000 MW, respectively.

Residents who attended a recent Hopkinton, N.Y., Town Council meeting were divided over new rule that would set new setback distances and zoning requirements for wind development. Avangrid Renewables is planning a project in the area and has opposed the proposed restrictions.
