Duke Energy issues RFP for 500 MW of installed wind capacity in Carolinas

Duke Energy has issued a request for proposals seeking to add up to 500 megawatts of installed wind capacity in North Carolina and South Carolina, according to the company. The company added that the offer is open to new and existing projects.

Nevada City, Calif., becomes latest US city to set 100% clean energy goal
Nevada City, Calif., has followed in the footsteps of Orlando, Fla., and other cities across the country in pledging to source 100% of the city's electricity from renewables by 2030. It added that by 2050, all energy sources in the city would be renewable energy-based.

Global oil giants invest in clean energy startups
The world's biggest oil companies are following the lead of venture capital investors by putting money into startups developing energy technologies. Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell and Total are among those investing in startups whose projects include developing new fuels from renewable resources and improving the efficiency of electricity grids.

    Vestas signs 123-turbine supply deal in Mexico
    Vestas has won a contract to supply Zuma Energia with 123 V136 3.45-megawatt turbines for its 424-MW Parque Eolico Reynosa wind farm in Tamaulipas, Mexico, said the companies. Vestas said it expects to begin delivering the units this year.

    First 3.4M140 EBC turbine from Senvion goes up in Germany
    Senvion has installed a single unit of its 3.4M140 EBC turbine prototype in Heckelberg, Germany, said the company. It added that the turbine, which is compatible with low wind speeds, featured a sound-optimized blade profile and updated pitch control system.

    Turbine operation is increasing, says Alliant
    Most turbines installed by Alliant Energy run at a 40% operating capacity, compared to only 20% or 30% a decade or less ago, said spokesman Justin Foss. He added that turbines may not spin for several reasons, including maintenance, low wind speeds and power grid capacity.

    Germany awards contracts to add over 1 GW of installed wind capacity
    Germany has awarded 67 projects the right to add a combined 1,013 megawatts of new installed land-based wind capacity under its second wind leasing round, according to network regulator Bundesnetzagentur. President Jochen Homann added that increased competition drove down pricing during the round.

    Omnibus spending deal, tax reform could extend tax credits
    Congress' omnibus spending package or tax reform deal will likely include provisions to reinstate tax credits for distributed wind and other small-scale renewables, according to a spokesman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Trade groups from a wide range of sectors, meanwhile, have expressed support for renewable energy tax credits, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, which is pushing for a wind energy Production Tax Credit extension.

    R.I. team launches environmental review of Block Island offshore wind farm
    University of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management researchers have teamed up to study Deepwater Wind's Block Island offshore wind farm and its effect on marine life and people living in the area. DEM Chief Marine Biologist Julia Livermore said part of her study would involve comparing fish and lobster population data from the project's permitting phase with new data to detect biological changes.
